Bistec Encebollado y Pimiento Verde

Hello everyone and welcome back to Nilda’s Kitchen. Yes it has been awhile since my last video but I have a good excuse. Spent the holidays in my favorite island, my home, Puerto Rico. Nothing like eating typical puerto rican food and learning about different dishes and new recipes as well. Hopefully I will be able to share with you soon what I learned. I will definitely keep you all posted.

So let’s get this started. I really love this this next dish because not only is it delicious, it is also so easy to make and you know me, I am all for what is easy. The way I cook it is similar to how I cook my Chuletas Guisadas (stewed pork chops). Preparation though is somewhat different but still extremely easy. To make Bistec Encebollado y Pimiento Verde you will need the following:

Ingredients:
Sandwich steak (aka Bola de Res)
This can be found at any local Spanish grocery store. If you are able to go to your local Spanish grocery store, ask the butcher to slice your Bola de Res in thin slices.

  • 2 tbs Vinegar (this is used to soften the meat, beef can be rough and take a long time to cook. By adding vinegar you shorten the cooking time)
  • Adobo (season each slice of steak)
  • 2 tbs Sofrito (you may add more of it if you like)
  • 2 Packets of Sazon (for added season and color)
  • One small chopped Onion
  • Half of a Bell Pepper chopped (You may eliminate this from this dish of you like, it is not necessarily needed)
  • Bowl big enough to hold and mix your meat
  • 1 cup water
  • Saucepan

Preparation:

First of all wash your hands. Once done, wash your meat thoroughly. Leave a little water in it so when you begin to add your ingredients it will mix easily. Add the vinegar to the meat, mix it in. Season your meat individually and mix in. Add your sofrito, mix it in and add your Sazon and mix this in as well. Put your chopped onion and bell pepper on top of your meat, if you like you can mix in it. Let your meat sit for approximately 15 to 20 minutes that way your meat can soften. Once you are ready to begin cooking, pour your cup of water into your saucepan, let it heat up. Once it heats up, place your meat in it. Pour any liquids left in your bowl for added season. With a fork spread your meat and mix in all your onions and bell peppers. Allow for the water to come to a boil. Bring your flame to low heat and cover your saucepan. Allow it cook for about 20 minutes, flip your meat around. Cover your saucepan again and allow it to cook for an additional 20 to 25 minutes. Check your meat to see if it rips easily, if it does you are ready to serve and enjoy.

Approximate cooking time varies.

Suggestion: Prepare your meat early in the day that way the longer it sits in the vinegar and seasoning, the softer your meat will be and the faster it will cook.
